Quick Hits: Ronley Teper's Lipliners

Ah, more stuff I couldn't deal with. It will undoubtedly get worse with a screaming baby on hand.

Ronley Teper's Lipliners, Alive
This is undoubtedly one of the most unique recordings you'll hear this year.  Captured live, this documents a performance by the Toronto-based, South African-born Teper as she alternately speaks and sings her stories over an improvised accompaniment.  Her backing band of 14 musicians includes folks who have worked with the likes of Amy Millan, Bob Wiseman, Prairie Oyster, Royal Wood, Rock Plaza Central, and many others.

It's easy to get lost in the sometimes creepy, sometimes tender music, especially when it's in full caterwaul.  Personally, I love the nod to INXS' "Mediate" on "Emancipate".

Ronley Teper's Lipliners hold two CD release shows on September 13th and 14th at The Piston in Toronto.
