Q&A with: Lisa Hannigan

Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan plays the Mod Club in Toronto tomorrow night (Mar. 1st).  I had the pleasure of speaking with Lisa in anticipation of the show.

Here's our conversation:

T.O. Snob:  First off, thanks for doing this for us.  How is the tour going?
Lisa Hannigan: It’s been great the gigs have been going really well.  Lots of people have been coming which is fantastic.  When you’re playing new places you never know if people are going to turn up but they have.  I’ve been seeing lots of places and eating all the really food.

T.O. Snob: You’re playing the Mod Club here in Toronto tomorrow night.  Will this be your first time playing Toronto?
LH: We actually played Massey Hall with Jason Mraz back in November.  We started in pretty much the best place you could play, which was a bit scary.

T.O. Snob: If someone has never seen your show before what can they expect?
LH: Well we’ve a lot of strange instruments.  We’ve got a harmonium and a stick bass and melodicas and bells and various bits of things that are unusual.  We’ve also got a really good band called The Low Anthem.  Other than that some uncoordinated dancing.

T.O. Snob: Every time I read about you people mention your collaboration with Damien Rice.  I was wondering was there a moment you decided it was time to step out on your own and take the spotlight?
LH: Um, no.  But I’m glad to be here now doing it.  There’s hardly any spotlight but I’m glad to have an album of my own, I‘m really happy with the record.

T.O. Snob: What inspires you to write?
LH: Just stuff that happens around me that’s amusing.  I find people endlessly fascinating and a lot of day-to-day things opposed to world affairs.

T.O. Snob: Speaking of fascinating, your Myspace page states that you are really good at roasting potatoes.  Do you have any secrets?
LH: I do but I would probably have to kill you.

The trick is I think to boil your potatoes until they’re very nearly done, about 15 minutes.  And then drain them and let them steam dry until they are really dry.  Then put the lid on and shake them a bit so they get a little bashed around the edges.  Then put them into a pan of hot oil or butter or whatever you’re using.   Cook them in the oil until they start to get a little crispy and then lash them in the oven for ½ until they are finished.

T.O. Snob: They sound really good.  I noticed you stitched your album cover yourself.  How long did that take you?
LH: It took about a day, a day and a half per page and then it took my mother a couple of nights to do the knitting.  Then we laid the dice over a week or something.

T.O. Snob: Where did the concept come from?
LH: I just really wanted it to be home made.  I wanted it to be a real thing that I made and just photographed like a book.  I really like the idea of that rather than having a picture Photoshopped knowing it was something that was going to be mass produced so I wanted to keep it as homespun as I could.  That was the reason really.  The concept was my mother’s got this sewing, needle book with pages that you pin the needles into.  I just really liked the look of it.  The soft pictures are so nice I just wanted it to look like a needle book.

T.O. Snob: In North America when people mention music and Ireland people usually think of U2 or maybe Van Morrison or The Pogues.  What does Irish music mean to you?
LH: Well the biggest band for me musically growing up as a teenager and coming up through college was The Frames.  They are a really big Irish band and they were, they are at the head of that scene if you like.  Scene is a terrible word but, the singer-songwriter movement that is happening in Ireland.  So I would associate the Irish music scene with The Frames.

But there’s always a great culture of music in Ireland, a lot of great electronic music, there’s lots of traditional and indie bands.  Just a lot of great music and a lot of great venues to play.  It’s a culture that’s just really receptive to musicians.  It’s a lot like Canada actually which has a great indie music scene as well.

T.O. Snob: Do you have any guilty musical pleasures?
LH: No, I don’t see any need for guilt in your musical pleasures.  I think maybe if someone put on you know Ghostbusters, the song from that movie.

T.O. Snob: Yeah Ray Parker Jr.
LH: Right Ray Parker Jr that would be a guilty pleasure.  I really like that one.  You put that on in any situation and people will dance.

T.O. Snob: I’ve just got one more question for you.  Is there anything you would like to say to your fans in Toronto before the show tomorrow?
LH: Just that I hope to see you there. We’ll put on a show and we’re really looking forward to it.

Thank you very much Lisa for doing this!

Bill Janovitz covers Husker Du, MP3

Former Buffalo Tom frontman Bill Janovitz has been very generous.  For several months now Janovitz has been posting a free downloadable MP3 of his "Cover of the Week" on his blog.  Each one comes with a story from Bill.

Previously we posted the MP3 for his cover of The Replacements' "Little Mascara" (MP3 here).

Now he's headed back to Minneapolis to do an acoustic cover of another of our favorite bands.  From Candy Apple Grey Janovitz is giving us an aching rendition of Husker Du's "Hardly Getting Over It" (MP3 here).

Thanks Bill!

The Supersuckers: "Music from the DVD in the CD 'Get It Together'" review

With the release of their latest CD Get It Together (review here), The Supersuckers threw in an accompanying live DVD.  That show is now available as an audio digital download.

The 25-song set sees the boys dishing out their own special brand of hot rock n' roll.  None of the country numbers make it here, only the high octane goodness.

Eddie and company give us a pretty broad survey of the Supersuckers' catalogue.  Older numbers like "Caliente" and "Mudhead" get dusted off and appear next to Get It Together tracks "What It Takes", "Paid", "When I Go, I'm Gone", and "Anything Else".

Of course, when you play a song 150+ nights a year, you can get bored playing it.  To fight this the Supersuckers give us a sick rocked up rendition of "Roadworn & Weary" that's worth the price of the download alone.

On top of that there's the countrified version of "Creepy Jackalope Eye".  On this occasion it's broken up by Eddie's hilarious rant about Good vs. Awesome.  It must be heard for the references to Awesometics the novel written by L. Ron Heathman.

Apparently the show was recorded on National Talk Like a Pirate Day, which we learn when the boys talk like pirates after blasting out "Fisticuffs".

The recording itself is a little bit bottom heavy, but you really don't notice after a track or two when the performance whips you into a frenzy.

Strong performance, awesome tunes, and more witty banter than you could swing a dead cat at.  Yep, it's a Supersuckers show.

The Supersuckers play Lee's Palace in Toronto on Mar. 13th as part of Canadian Music Week.

Whatever happened to: The Diodes?

While not as happening as New York, London, or LA, Toronto did have a punk scene of it's own in the late '70s.

One of the leading lights was Toronto's Diodes.

The Diodes are best known for their hit "Tired Of Waking Up Tired", which came up on my iPod to inspire this in the first place.

The band had a brief reunion a few years ago, but now I'd like to know whatever happened to The Diodes?

Trey Green: "Trey Green" Album Review

Every now and again there's an artist whose sense of humour is so absurdly funny that you uncontrollably spew streams of scalding hot java out of your nostrils.  Trey Green is one of those artists.

The Boston-based, Memphis-born Green plays good ol' thyme rock n' roll with a twist, sharp comedic edge to it.

Some of the humour is blunt and in-your-face, like the British Invasion-styled "My Fantastic Ass". Others, such as the hilarious white guy dancing of "Smooth Breakdancin' Guy" have a more subtle rock n' roll Brad Paisley humour to them...and yes, it sounds like Green is pretty fly for a white guy.

Green even seems to take cues from Monty Python with the insesently repetitive almost the the point of being annoying "The Forever and Ever Song".

If it were just funny lyrics, Trey Green would wear on your nerves pretty quickly.  Where the genius lies is in the foundation of solid traditional rock and roll.  The songs themselves are strong, which allows the album to withstand repeated listenings.

Getting tired of the same old They Might Be Giants and Dead Milkmen records?  Give Trey Green a chance.

Best tracks: "Smooth Breakdancin' Guy", "My Fantastic Ass"

Track listing for Trey Green:
  •  Smooth Breakdancin' Guy- MP3
  • My Girlfriend

Q&A: North Elementary's John Harrison

Chapel Hill band North Elementary released their new album Not For Everyone, Just For You this week (review here).

I had the opportunity to sit down with the band's lead singer John Harrison to discuss the album and more.  Here's our convo:

T.O. Snob: First off, thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us.

Your new album, Not For Everyone, Just For You was just released. How would you describe the album and North Elementary’s sound?

John Harrison: My best guess to describe this album would be songs that are surrounded by sounds and noise lending a 3D quality to the final compositions. I enjoy writing the songs (mostly on acoustic guitar on my couch) – then taking them to the band to work out that arrangement and add their personal influences – then finally in the recording process, taking the song and tying different sounds/beeps/noise to destroy it or hide it or enhance it – this keeps the songs interesting for me….it has to start with a good song so I spend most of my time writing songs to get to the “good” ones. Without a good song the surrounding noises and sounds have no weight to them.

North Elementary live sound is has a fairly similar approach and style but tends to rock more – it’s more fun for everyone that way… I like to think songs can be presented in a variety of ways – we often build places in the song to keep us in the moment or for a few of us to divert away from the actual song to create new sounds and avenues….it keeps the live experience interesting for everyone night after night.

T.O. Snob: What inspires a North Elementary song?

JH: I’m inspired by other musicians and artists along with their works (books, songs, paintings, movies) – Girls are a big one, being outside/nature, friends, good times, bad times, being humbled, excited, overwhelmed, being bored – personal insight/observations – often times I write lyrics as reminders to myself about a revelation I had or something I felt I had discovered at some point – most of the time the songs are originally written in 1st person but even I get tired of every song containing the words ME and I – so I change the person perspective to keep myself interested…..

T.O. Snob: The band’s name is interesting. Where did it come from?

I’d been 4 tracking songs for a long while but never really had any intention of releasing them or playing live….so I never really needed a name. Finally I was asked to play a show and they need a band name to put on the flier…..so while on tour in another band (The Comas) we passed an elementary school in Virginia and it was called North Elementary….I really was drawn to the font and style of the words more so than what they said at that time…..so – that was the name – at the time I wasn’t sure what style of music I was wanting to release (and in some ways I still don’t) so I felt it was a non genre specific name….and that is the name story

T.O. Snob: Your tour dates so far don’t have you coming up to visit us in Toronto. Do you have any plans to tour north of the border?

JH: We would love to…if anyone would like to help bring us up there for a few shows – let’s do it! We have passports. I would like to go see the birthplace of Neil Young to pick up some good mojo…

T.O. Snob: If you could tour with any artist in the world who would it be?

JH: Wow – hmmm – here is a short list in no particular order….

1. Dinosaur Jr

2. Wilco

3. My Bloody Valentine

4. Velvet Underground

5. Archers of Loaf

6. Helmet

7. Spiritualized

8. Neil Young and Crazy Horse

9. The Beatles

10. Pistolero

T.O. Snob: What is your guiltiest musical pleasure?

JH: Gosh – I have a lot really – I listen to more Hawaiian music than most would admit to but I’m sure that’s not exactly what you are talking about. I listen to a fair amount of what ever “hit” pop song is happening at the moment – and with iTunes and whatnots I’m able to download and own them as well….I usually don’t know the names of the songs but like the hook lines like “If you want then you should have put a ring on it” – yup I downloaded that song. I downloaded that last JLo song that was supposed to be a “hit” but in mega song sales I think was a bomb….I like it.

Often times it’s the production and the lyrics that are hard to swallow – but the “song” is good – I think that happened a bunch in the boy band and Brittany Spears days – are they over? Example: Backstreet Boys “playn games with my heart” – good song – bad presentation.

For the record I think Justin Timberlake is awesome

Did I just say all that?

T.O. Snob: Have you ever heard a song and said “damn I wish I wrote that one”?

JH: Yeah – all the time – I think it goes back to that inspiration question – those sorta songs are inspiring and have always made me want to pick up my guitar- years ago and today…

don’t let it bring you down”

tom cortenay”

the lung”

this must be the place (naive melody)”

don’t worry be happy” – strictly for financial reasons

T.O. Snob: Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans in Toronto?

JH: Go create something! Anything – do something!!!

or

Go buy our new record at http://eskimokissrecords.com/ and thank you for all the support you give us in the various ways you see fit to do so – we truly hope to see you soon!

T.O. Snob: Thanks again for taking the time to speak with us.

JH: CHEERS!

Wild Light: "Adult Night"- Album Review

Adult Nights is the highly anticipated debut album from New Hampshire quartet Wild Light (out Mar. 3rd).  The band has received overwhelming praise from SPIN magazine among others.

The quartet, comprised of guitarist Jordan Alexander, drummer Seth Kasper, and multi-instrumentalists Seth Pitman and Timothy Kyle (yes two Seths) teamed up with Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Guided By Voices) to produce the record.  The result is an album that sound like cleaned-up Guided By Voices style indie pop.

Songs like "California On My Mind" attack the '70s free love vibe with an indie rock 'fuck San Fransisco' ethos.  Harmonies vocals permeate the album.  However, on cuts like "Canyon City" they are done in the most manly way possible.

The head-nodding fun of "The Party (Oh My God)" and the keyboard drive of "My Father Was a Horse" meld with countless well-placed woo-oohs and whoooooas in contrast with Arcade Fire orchestrals (Alexander is a former roommate of Arcade Fire's Win Butler).

As a result Adult Nights is a record that should have mass appeal amongst indie rock fans.

Best tracks: "California On My Mind", "The Party (Oh My God)"

Track listing for Adult Nights:
  • California On My Mind
  • New Hampshire
  • Canyon City
  • Surf Generation

Bell: "Magic Tape" MP3

Bell is a pretty simple name for a band (what, no X1 at the end?).

The electro-indie trio is the culmination of work by Moscow-born, Alaska-raised Olga Bell.  The band will be releasing their new single on March 24th.

You can hear the envelope-pushing deconstructionist sound of the band on the track "Magic Tape" (MP3 here).

Neko Case: "Middle Cyclone"- Album Review

Neko Case seems to have an unhealthy preoccupation with romancing funnel clouds on her forthcoming album Middle Cyclone.  I for one don't think making love to a tornado is really that appealing an idea.

Middle Cyclone kicks off with a bang.  "This Tornado Loves You" sets an uptempo tone, uncommon for a Case album.  The lead single, "People Got A Lotta Nerve" is plucky and fast paced, making great use of Case's big lunged voice.

Unfortunately, the album quickly settles into a twangy rut.  Slowing to a crawl, and lacking the punch of Case's vocals, many of the songs on Middle Cyclone tend to run together.  Distinguishing one from another becomes a challenge.

When Case does give us her booming vocals, like on "Magpie In the Morning", the results are incredible.  She simply smolders on "Prison Girls", giving it a '60s spy movie aura. Sadly those songs are too few and far between on the record.

We are treated to a couple of strong covers.  Case does an excellent job on The Sparks' "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth" and Harry Nilsson's "Don't Forget Me".

Despite a plethora of guest artists including: Kelly Hogan, M. Ward, Sarah Harmer, and members of The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, and Calexico, Middle Cyclone fails to rise to the occasion...that's not to mention the 30-minute closing track which features little more than crickets chirping.

Best tracks: "People Got a Lotta Nerve", "I'm An Animal"

Track listing for Middle Cyclone:
  • This Tornado Loves You
  • Next Time You Say Forever
  • People Got a Lotta Nerve
  • Polar Nettles

Roman Candle: new album "Oh Tall Tree In the Ear"

North Carolina band Roman Candle have just announced the release of their new studio album.  Oh Tall Tree In the Ear will hit the streets May 12th.

The album was recorded in Nashville and produced by Jason Lehning (Allison Krauss) and Chris Stamey (Whiskeytown).

What I've heard is catchy and twangy.  A very hot combo.  "Why Modern Radio Is A-OK with Me" should be a indie rock hit.

The Black Lips: "200 Million Thousand"- Album Review

Atlanta's Black Lips have torn up the indie scene over the past couple of years.  The band has built a loyal following with their ramshackle DIY sound.

200 Million Thousand is the new studio album from the quartet, it's fifth.

While lo-fi production values like tinny guitars and washed out vocals permeate every song throughout the album, it's remarkable just how diverse the band can sound within that spectrum.

The sweet guitar riff of the opener "Take My Heart" is likely the most typical song fans would expect to hear from the band.  It's a psychadelic garage tripper gone wrong.

However, the album gets far more eclectic from there.  "Drugs" has washed out surfy undertones.  You could easily convince me that "Again & Again" and "Body Combat" are actually drunken barroom Kinks covers.  The driving piano and big guitars on "Short Fuse" make it vaguely reminiscent of a 70s FM radio hit by, say Aerosmith.  "I'll Be With You" goes even further back for its inspiration, dredging up images of a '50s sock hop.

Venturing further from their comfort zone, "Old Man" features a Middle Eastern musical edge with vocals that could've been lifted straight off an early Zappa record.

The first single "Starting Over" is the most accessible track on the album.  I wouldn't be surprised to hear this down tempo lament shilling Volkswagons or FTD bouquets in the near future.

Most bizarrely, "Trapped In a Basement" has such a trippy Doors vibe to it you are almost waiting for Cole Alexander to declare himself the Lizard King.  A close second would be the seemingly Tom Waits-inspired troubadour track "Elijah".

With all the diversity of sound and influence 200 Million Thousand hangs together surprisingly well as an album.  It's a real trip, one any rock fan should take.

Best tracks: "Starting Over", "Short Fuse"

Ben Kweller & the Watson Twins in Toronto- Live Review

While it wasn't a packed house at The Mod Club in Toronto last night, those who did make it out to see Ben Kweller were treated to an exceptional show.

The mop-headed Texan played a combination of old favorites and new cuts from his new country album Changing Horses.  The inclusion of a pedal steel guitar on pretty much every song, non-country ones included, ensured a seamless flow of the material, even turning "Sundress" into a country shuffle.

Kweller was also full of stories.  Relating tales about Oasis and talking about his absent guitar tech, and bantering with fan "Luke" who had attending his in-store earlier in the day, Kweller kept the audience in stiches for a good portion of the night.

The highlight of the performance was likely Kweller's playing piano and harmonica at the same time.  It got quite the stir from the crowd.

The Watson Twins opened.  It was a slow start as much for the crowd appeared disappointingly disinterested.  Chandra and Leigh won them over by the end with tracks like "How Am I To Be" and their harmonica heavy rendition of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven".

In a fan friendly move the twins spent Kweller's entire set at the merch table chit chatting with fans.  A classy touch.

Kweller and the Watsons provided a fun evening.  It was a great example of everything a concert experience should be.

Fountains Of Wayne: "No Better Place- Live In Chicago" DVD review

Fountains Of Wayne are one of those bands that it's damn near impossible to hate.  They make catchy, accessible pop tunes that feature clever lyrics (Adam Schlesinger wrote songs for Stephen Colbert of God's sake).  It's a winning combination.

No Better Place- Live In Chicago is the band's first live DVD (out March 3rd).

Recorded at a 2005 show in the Windy City, the DVD is pretty much a straight up performance from the band.  The band give us 16 of their best tunes including the hits "Stacy's Mom", "Radiation Vibe", and "Hey Julie".  We even get a snippet of the outro to "Layla" during "I've Got Flair".

The sound is clean and clear.  The mix is one of the better one's I've heard on a live recording.  With the exception of severely underpowered keyboards, it is a radio-worthy sound.

The visuals are exceptional as far as live DVDs are concerned.  The setting is bright, well lit theatre, rather than a dingy club that we often see with concert films.  An attractive backdrop of multiple screens and lights serves well too.

Fountains Of Wayne however are not a band of showmen.  It's more or less a stand-at-your-mic-and-sing delivery, which tends to get dull to watch.

As a bonus features we're given six more songs performed live in studio and acoustically.

If you are a Fountains Of Wayne fan No Better Place is a decent document for you.
