Id Guinness: Cure for the Common Crush- Album Review

Cure for the Common Crush is the cleverly titled debut album from Vancouver progressive rocker Id Guinness.  The album has received heaps for praise from the online rock community including a Top 25 of 2008 spot from Indie-Music.com.

An eclectic collection of songs, Cure for the Common Crush takes equally from '70s progressive rock and the '00s indie underground.

Dark FM radio overtones meet with a well placed smattering of horns to create the prog feel.  Guinness also seems to make it his mission to singlehandedly resurrect the lost art of the guitar solo (it's about time if you ask me).

Those elements are contrasted with an often lo-fi aesthetic an Mercury Rev-like cinematics.

Vocally, Guinness shifts back and forth between Ben Gibbard high nasal tones and decadent Berlin-era Bowie.

From time to time the melodrama of the album can become a tad overbearing.  For example, "The One That Got Away" sounds a little too close to Pink Floyd's "Welcome To the Machine" for my comfort (mostly because I hate Floyd).

While labelling it one of the best albums of 2008 may be a stretch, one can't help but admire Guinness for taking a musical genre that had been left for dead and dragging it into the 21st Century.

Guinness' second album, Soul Envy, is on track for an August release.

Best tracks: "I Have Seen the Future", "The Joke"

Track listing for Cure for the Common Crush:
  • Rising River
  • The One That Got Away
  • Jade Garden
  • I Have Seen the Future
  • Down To This
  • Cure For the Common Crush
  • Always Crashing In the Same Car

Whatever happened to: Collective Soul?

You must remember Collective Soul.  They were responsible for some of the most M.O.R. hits of the "alternative" '90s.  "December", "Gel", "Shine", they were to blame for each of those.

We haven't heard much from the band or its members lately, so my question becomes: whatever happened to Collective Soul?

Emm Gryner: Goddess- Album Review

Singer/songwriter Emm Gryner is one of the most under appreciated talents on the Canadian music scene.  For years she's been making album after album of beautifully crafted songs.

Gryner's new album, Goddess, is about to hit stores.

I recently had the pleasure of doing an interview with Gryner.  When asked to describe the new album she called it:

"Probably the most personal album I've ever made. There were a few songs I wrote recently that I thought were poppier or more catchy and I just left them off because they had no place intruding on the moody, subzero landscape of this album." (read the entire interview here).

That's a fairly apt description.  Set against a backdrop of relationship struggles and stark Canadiana imagery, Gryner's song swing effortlessly from quiet introspection ("Skating Rink") to unabashed defiance ("Match").

Somehow those songs of strength and defiance seem darker and more sinister when conveyed by Gryner's soaring and melodic voice than the would with the meanest Riot Grrl growl.

Gryner's signature piano sound is less dominant on Goddess.  Filling the void are elegant cello and violin arrangements ("Goddess").  The guitars and drums are also turned up on the album, making songs like "Empty Hole" some of her hardest ever.

Big, bold choruses also play a major role on the album.  "Die Evergreen" is a towering anthem, while Gryner's impressive pipes  and a killer hook make "Leftover Love" one of the best songs of 2009 so far.

When all is said and done Goddess is an otherworldly album.

Emm Gryner plays the Glenn Gould Theatre in Toronto on Feb. 7th.

Best tracks: "Leftover Love"

Track listing for Goddess:
  • Let It Snow
  • Goddess
  • Young As the Night
  • Empty Hole
  • Die Evergreen
  • Skating Rink
  • Match
  • Killing Spree
  • Leftover Love

Winston Audio: The Red Rhythm- Album Review

The Red Rhythm is the debut album from Atlanta, GA's Winston Audio.  The album, out Feb. 10th, is a collection of eleven hard rock songs infused with indie spirit.

From the opening track "On My Trail" it becomes apparent that these guys like to rock hard.  The guitar work is an in-your-face tour de force.  Despite being flangy and buzzy at times, the work is top shelf (next to the Johnnie Walker blue label).

Along with the mid tempo southern-tinged rock riffs (think Dead Confederate) come a powerful set of vocals which sound like a tenuously controlled Chris Cornell.

The grinding mid/down tempo numbers do get a bit tiresome.  That's mostly because the band is so good when they rock out hard and fast ("Keeping It Down", "Smoke Signal").

The album ends with a couple of the more intriguing numbers.  "Future Blues" is a stellar dark rumbling 'blues from a gun' number, while the closer "Troubles" is a haunting hard rock lullaby.

The album does suffer from production issues.  The audio quality at times can be fuzzy and murky, making one believe that the band's best may be lost in the process.

Best tracks: "Future Blues", "Keeping It Down"

Track listing for The Red Rhythm:
  • On My Trail
  • All This Time
  • Keeping It Down
  • Hey Ann- MP3
  • Nothing To Hide
  • Martyr
  • Smoke Signal
  • Devil's Bed

Heartless Bastards: The Mountain- Album Review

The Mountain (out Feb. 3rd) is the third album from Dayton, OH's Heartless Bastards.  The new album was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail Of Dead).

The band is really the brainchild of singer/songwriter/guitarist Erika Wennerstrom.  For this album she surrounded herself with a new band which includes drummer Dave Colvin and bassist Jesse Ebaugh.

Heartless Bastards' music is based on no-nonsense blues rock, with Wennerstrom's voice seizing the spotlight.  She bellows and rasps her way through these eleven tracks like a 21st Century Janis Joplin.  You can almost picture her swigging from the 40oz of Jack on songs like "Could Be So Happy".

While Wennerstrom's powerful lungs are undoubtedly star attraction, the music should not be underestimated.  These songs are as vibrant as they are boombastic, with countless layers to peel back and explore.

"The Mountain" opens the record with a jagged and dynamic soundscape.  The tempo picks up with the garage rock clatter of "Out At Sea", before settling into a mournful blues groove.

The band has some textural trips up their sleeves as well.  All is revealed when they break out the string arrangements on an elegant "So Quiet" and a banjo for the organic "Had To Go".

The Mountain is a sonic adventure the listener won't soon forget.

Heartless Bastards play Calgary Apr. 7, Edmonton Apr. 8, and Vancouver Apr. 10 in support of Gaslight Anthem.

Best tracks: "Out At Sea", "The Mountain"

Bruce Springsteen: Working On A Dream- Album Review

I have never been a fanatical Bruce Springsteen fan.  However, he is one of those artists (like Bob Dylan) where it's easy to understand why he inspires such devotion.  I guess that's my way of saying while I don't own all his records, I do have a tremendous level of respect for him and more importantly his music.

Working On A Dream is Springsteen's new album.  Mega-producer Brendan O'Brien is behind the board and the E-Street Band is once again ably backing.

The album's opening track, the epic "Outlaw Pete", sets the tone for much of the record.  It's a lush and polished number, indicating a less gritty and roadworn production from Springsteen.

Tracks like "What Love Can Do", "Life Itself", and the title track are hopeful, symphonic and extremely absorbing.  The blue collar hero is definitely goes upscale on the album.

There are a handful of songs, such as "My Lucky Day" and "Surprise, Surprise", that will have you brushing the dust and gravel off your faded blue jeans in vintage Springsteen fashion.

The most intriguing song on Working On A Dream is probably "Good Eye".  The track is an experimental bluegrass romp which wouldn't sound out of place on a Drive-By Truckers record.

Add on the Golden Globe winning theme song for The Wrestler as a bonus track, and Working On A Dream truly does have something for everyone.

Long live rock n' roll and long live Bruce Springsteen.

Bruce Springsteen plays the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on May 7th.

Best tracks: "Queen of the Supermarket", "Surprise, Surprise"

Track listing for Working On A Dream:
  • Outlaw Pete

Ben Kweller: Changing Horses- Album Review

On his new album Changing Horses (out Feb. 3rd), indie popster Ben Kweller returns to his Texas roots with his first all-country record.

From the first chords of Hank Williams-style "Gypsy Rose" it becomes obvious that this will be the "wife ran away with the dog" kind of country rather than the slick new country.

If Matthew Sweet and Ryan Adams were to have a bastard lovechild he would pen songs that sound like these.

Kweller's clever lyrics and knack for the pop hook translate remarkably well into the country realm.  "On Her Own" and "Hurtin' You" are the type of singalong you expect from Kweller while "Things I Like To Do" is just dripping with wit, making him sound like a twangy Evan Dando.

One can tell Kweller is serious about this effort and he's not doing country with any tongue-in-cheek.  You can almost feel the sawdust and peanut shells on the ground and smell the stale beer when you listen to the party stomper "Sawdust Man".

The album is best when Kweller is playing uptempo.  The lead single "Fight" is destined to be a truck driving road anthem.

Some of the slower tracks, like "Ballad of Wendy Baker", do tend to drag.  However, possibly the album's best track is the slow-mover "Old Hat" one which Kweller laments 'I never wanna be the old hat you put on your pretty head'.  It makes for a very pretty song.

Changing Horses isn't perfect, but it is a hip pocket full o' fun.

Anyone who pre-orders Changing Horses (here) will be entered to win Ben Kweller prizes including dinner with Ben.

Ben Kweller plays the Mod Club in Toronto on Feb. 22nd with The Watson Twins.

Best tracks: "Old Hat", "On Her Own"

Mark Olson & Gary Louris: Ready For the Flood- Album Review

As two of the founding members of the trailblazing alternative country group The Jayhawks, Mark Olson and Gary Louris made some of the most memorable twang in indie rock.  Ready For the Flood is the first collaboration between the two former bandmates since 1995.

The album opens with the familiar acoustic country notes and vocal harmonies of "The Rose Society".  The duet theme is repeated throughout the album, and it's one that Jayhawks fans have yearned for years to hear again.

Unfortunately, simple, slow, alt.country ditties are pretty much all we get on the album.  The melodies are pleasant enough, but far from remarkable or noteworthy.

Some songs are memorable for the wrong reasons.  In hushed tones Olson & Louris do a poor Simon & Garfunkel impersonation on "Saturday Morning On Sunday Street".

"Chamberlain, SD" is a rare gem.  The tempo picks up and a walloping country romp is underway.  Too bad it only lasts for one song.

A Mark Olson and Gary Louris reunion had a lot of allure and potential.  It's too bad that Ready For the Flood fails to deliver.

Mark Olson & Gary Louris play the Mod Club in Toronto on Feb. 4th.

Best tracks: "Chamberlain, SD", "Doves and Stones"

Track listing for Ready For the Flood:
  • The Rose Society

Q&A with Ben Lee!

Master of the catchy chorus Ben Lee has his new album, Rebirth Of Venus, coming out on Feb. 10th (read my review here).

Recently I had the opportunity to do a Q&A with Lee about the new album and music in general.  I'd like to give a shout out to my brother, Bean Counter (a massive Ben Lee fan), for helping to come up with the questions for Ben.

T.O. Snob: First off thanks for taking the time to do this for us.

You have your new album, Rebirth Of Venus comes out on February 10th.  What can your fans expect from the new record?

Ben Lee: ITS PRETTY ECLECTIC AND COLLAGE STYLE POP. BIG CHORUSES AND LOTS OF HOPE MIXED WITH SOME CHAOS AND CORDUROY.

T.O. Snob: You’ve been at this music game for what must seem a lifetime now.  Is the Rebirth Of Venus a rebirth of sorts for Ben Lee as well?

BL: EACH ALBUM FEELS LIKE SOMEWHAT OF A REBIRTH. I FALL PREY TO THE WHOLE "THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM I'VE EVER MADE!" SYNDROME THAT ALL MUSICIANS DO. THIS TIME IT FEELS LIKE I'M ONE STEP CLOSER TO AN AUTHENTICITY THAT I'VE ALWAYS SOUGHT IN MY MUSIC.

T.O. Snob: As someone who has been in the industry from a young teenager onwards, do you feel you missed out on any experiences that you may have had if you had more conventional teenage years?

BL: YEAH I PROBABLY MISSED OUT ON HAVING SOME MORE TIME OUT OF PUBLIC EARSHOT TO DEVELOP MY MUSIC. IT WAS ALOT OF PRESSURE TO BE OUT IN FRONT OF CRITICS AND CROWDS AT AN AGE WHERE I WAS NATURALLY SELF-CONSCIOUS AND INSECURE. THAT BEING SAID, I WAS QUITE MISERABLE LEADING A 'REGULAR LIFE' SO I WOULDN'T CHANGE THE WAY IT WENT DOWN. MUSIC PROVIDED A REAL OUTLET FOR ME.

T.O. Snob: Have your influences changed from when you began?

BL: I STILL LOVE JONATHAN RICHMAN SO NOT THAT MUCH HAS CHANGED! I GUESS THE BIGGEST THING IS THAT I STILL APPRECIATE LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS BUT NOWADAYS I DON'T FEEL THAT I NEED TO ABSORB EVERYTHING INTO MY MUSIC STYLISTICALLY. I'M QUITE HAPPY LISTENING TO SOME HEAVY DUDE ROCK WITHOUT FEELING THE NEED TO MAKE IT.

T.O. Snob: “Catch My Disease” was a breakthrough song for you, has that success changed you or your approach to songwriting?

BL: IT VALIDATED MY PROCESS TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. YOU GET THOSE MOMENTS THAT MAKE YOU THINK "MAYBE I'M NOT CRAZY". BUT ULTIMATELY MY APPROACH HASN'T CHANGED THAT DRASTICALLY. I STILL LIKE BIG POP SONGS THAT ARE CATCHY BUT HAVE SOME INTELLIGENCE AND SOUL TO THEM.

T.O. Snob: In the past you’ve worked with Liz Phair, and the likes of Ben Folds and Ben Kweller as The Bens, if you could work with anyone in the future who would that be?

BL: I'D LOVE TO MAKE A KIDS RECORD WITH PATIENCE FROM THE GRATES.

T.O. Snob: Last year you released a song-for-song cover of Against Me!’s New Wave album.  What made you pick that album and have you thought of doing others in the future?

BL: IT WAS VERY ORGANIC. I JUST LIKED THE ALBUM ALOT AND WAS EXCITED ABOUT INVESTIGATING IT FROM THE INSIDE. I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER DOING IT AGAIN BUT IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A NATURAL FAN-BASED EXPERIENCE AGAIN, JUST LOVING AN ALBUM ENOUGH TO INSPIRE ME.

T.O. Snob: The cover album was released as a free download, how has technology affected or changed your approach to releasing music?

BL: INDIE-ROCK ALWAYS HAD LOTS OF UNCONVENTIONAL OUTLETS FOR RELEASING MUSIC WHETHER IT WAS TAPE-TRADING, SPLIT 7' SINGLES, SIDE PROJECTS ETC. TECHNOLOGY HAS JUST OPENED THE DOOR EVEN WIDER INTO CREATING MORE AVENUES TO KEEP YOUR CREATIVITY FLOWING.

T.O. Snob: You also penned the soundtrack for the movie The Square, but all the songs were sung by Jessica Chapnik.  Do you find that you write differently knowing that someone else will be singing your songs?

BL: SOMETIMES. THERE AREN'T REALLY MANY RULES THAT I CAN DECODE ABOUT SONGWRITING. I TRY TO WRITE FROM A SENSE OF PURE INSPIRATION AND EXCITEMENT, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE PROJECT IS ABOUT.

T.O. Snob: What is your guiltiest musical pleasure?

BL: NO GUILT, ALL PLEASURE.

T.O. Snob: Have you ever heard a song and said “damn I wish I wrote that one”?

BL: LITHIUM BY NIRVANA.

T.O. Snob: You don’t hear yourself on the radio, is that really the way you like it?

BL: AT THIS POINT, I COULD GO EITHER WAY. I DON'T FEEL AS DESPERATELY IN NEED OF THE VALIDATION OF MASSIVE SUCCESS AS I ONCE DID. I HOPE PEOPLE THAT LIKE WHAT I DO GET INSPIRED.

T.O. Snob: Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans in Toronto?

BL: LOVE TO T-DOT. SEE YOU SOON!

T.O. Snob: Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me.  I wish you nothing but success in 2009.

BL: THANK YOU. SAME TO YOU.

Beati Paoli: A Sense Of Urgency- Album Review

Omaha, NE has proven that just because you are in the middle of nowhere doesn't mean cool things can't come out.  So step to the plate Des Moines, Iowa (I don't actually know what the two letter abbreviation is for Iowa).

Beati Paoli is a rising indie rock quartet from that state that is probably most famous as the site of a Kevin Costner baseball flick.

On their full length debut album, A Sense Of Urgency, Beati Paoli blends experimental sonic textures with the undiluted clatter of garage rock.  The result is a ramshackle structure (a la The Fall) played with the shimmer of anthemic arena rock guitars.

The more ethereal elements of the music (as on "Lovely To Someone") drone darkly like the best of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.  Reverb on "You Are My Megalodon" puts the band in neo-shoegazer territory with the likes of Asobi Seksu.

In taking the best of The Strokes and Rocket From The Crypt ("Maggie" and "Vulgarity Drifting Diary" respectively), Beati Paoli comes up with a unique spin on the now overused garage rock riff.

Unfortunately, with all those influences and sounds, A Sense Of Urgency does have a tendency to sound a bit scattergun from song-to-song.  At times (like on "If The Mood Should Strike...") the raspiness is enough to make one swear it was Dave Pirner singing lead vocals, which doesn't seem to fit easily in with the rest of the music being made.

The band's triumph is probably "While We're Young (Sing Me Something New)" which adds pop hooks and horn flourishes to the garage/gazer formula.  It's a risk, but one that pays off in spades.

Best tracks: "While We're Young (Sing Me Something New)", "Maggie"

Track listing for A Sense Of Urgency:
  • Rabble Rouse
  • A Sense Of Urgency
  • Girl Friday
  • Lovely To Someone
  • Vulgarity Drifting Diary
  • Maggie
  • Every Day, An Elegy
