Yuuki Matthews: "Music for Savage Tropical Imagery" (album review)

Making an engaging electronic-based instrumental album can be a very difficult task.  Just ask Crystal Skulls' Yuuki Matthews.  The Seattle-based musician has just released an all-instrumental album Music for Savage Tropical Imagery.

Matthews starts off on a promising note.  The album opener "Villa" is a riveting back-and-forth.  It's followed hotly with the post-rock tick tock of "HK Cinema Funk".

It's obviously difficult to keep up the momentum though.  The album quickly falls into a rut of mellow beats, electronics, samples and loops, none of which really ignite the listener's imagination.  Touches of lo-fi rock help, but their appearances are too few and scattered to build much force for the music.

At the end of the day Music for Savage Tropical Imagery just doesn't have enough meat to hold the attention of a sober listener.  Whatever you do, don't get rid of your Holy Fuck albums.

Best tracks: "Villa", "Conquerors"

its funny to me that under the leave a comment section it says: "...please put some thought into it." It seems to me this reviewer is approaching the album from the wrong angle to mention a holy f&%* album as if there is any comparison whatsoever. 3.5 out of 10 is a ridiculous rating. this music waaaaay better than that.
