Nana Grizol: "Ruth" (album review)

Nana Grizol's new album Ruth has been kicking around in digital format for more than a month now.  On January 12th it will finally receive a proper physical release.

The Athens, GA based band has strong ties to the Elephant 6 community, with members having been in bands such as The Music Tapes and the iconic Neutral Milk Hotel.  However, Nana Grizol's own sound however is probably not what you would expect from a band with that pedigree.

Yes, the songs tend to be ornate, with complicated structures.  Where the band differs from it's relations is in the aesthetic choices.  Songs like "Blackbox" are more raw and rough edged than what you would expect from an Elephant 6 act.  Fuzz and feedback, while not dominant, are undoubtedly a more important element.

In terms of songwriting, the lyrics tend to be fun and clever, adding immensely to the arrangements.

If you want to start 2010 off with an album that is artistic without being pretentious, then Ruth is definitely for you.

You can read my recent interview with principal songwriter Theo Hilton here.
