If you aren't familiar with Victoria, BC's The Paper Cranes you will be shortly. The band's new album, Chivalry's Dead, is due for an August 18th release.
The five-some pull out all of the sonic tricks on the album. The traditional rock arrangement of guitar, drums, bass are augmented with horns, strings, harmonica, and electronic production tricks to create a bold and diverse sound.
Each song on the record has its own distinct personality. We have a dark and moody title track, Electric Six-style indie funk with "Black Centipedes" and a harmonica riff on "Telephone". The catchy "Occidental Accidents" borrows an 'oh oh oh' refrain from Born Ruffians, while the exceptional "Thorazine Shuffle" sounds like early Spoon, punctuated with a Johnny Marr-esque guitar vibe. "The Cavalier" is a big vibrant sounding track with a monster hook.
While eclectic in sound, the album still manages to flow and hang together as a whole. The entire experience is made enjoyable from beginning to end.
When all is said and done I think that Chivalry's Dead can be summed up in one simple word: brilliant.
Best tracks: "Thorazine Shuffle", "The Cavalier"
