Attractive Eighties Women: "The Ancient Cry Of The Tyrannosaur" album review

While there are no actual women in Atlanta rock band Attractive Eighties Women, there is a solid sense of humour that the band's very name displays. The good times party rockers are set to drop their new album, The Ancient Cry Of The Tyrannosaur, on an unsuspecting public on August 29th.

Drawing mostly on garage rock influences, the band blasts through comically themed tracks like "I Lost My Black Hoodie (At the Masquerade)" and "Bathroom Blitz". You can tell just by a cursory scan of the titles that the record will be a laugh a minute.

Most of the themes used for comedic purposes are either mundane ("Wasabi Mayonnaise"), absurd ("Zombie House") or down right offensive ("Surfing Or Aids"). It's when they band hits on a theme we can all relate to, like punching an irritating bluetooth user in the face, that they are most effective.

The band's shortcomings are pretty apparent though. Despite an undeniable enthusiasm for what they are doing, their lack of prowess with their instruments quickly becomes grating. Lead vocalists Phoebe Cates' Green Jello-like growl doesn't add much to the proceeding.

In fact it's not until we get to the hidden track "Stomp and Stammer" that we hit on something that is worth adding to your playlist. The song possesses the most memorable chorus and clever hook of the bunch.

The Ancient Cry Of The Tyrannosaur is destined to be one of those albums you play for your friends once with glee.

Best tracks: "Stomp and Stammer", "Bluetooth/Blackeye"
