It's been three years, a band break-up, and a subsequent reunion since we last heard from Charleston's The Working Title. Well now the band is back and on the brink of releasing their second full length album Bone Island (out July 21st).
The new album for the most part is a rough-edged roots-inspired indie rock effort. Songs like the piano rocker "Physical Love" and the guitar-driven "Sugar For My Sugar" are as good power pop as you are likely to hear these days. "Someone Else" is a catchy jangle rock ditty.
While we are served up slices of Americana like the twangy duet "Arms and Thighs", The Working Title aren't afraid to top it all off with some experiments. As singer Joel Hamilton lets loose on the throat-tearing "Wolf", a mechanized beat pounds away, giving the song a nearly perfect balance of new and old.
It's not all wine and roses on Bone Island however. Tracks like "Love Make Me Free" and "You Should Know" are a little too slick, with a radio-friendly ballad style better left to Keane or The Fray. "Darkness" and "Followed" are both simply plodding.
Bone Island isn't a perfect album, but there are enough catchy and fresh moments to make it a highly enjoyable listening experience.
