Tabernacle: "Word, Pioneer" EP review

Tabernacle is the new project from Dame Satan's Andrew Simmons. Flanked by a bevvy of guest musicians, he has recorded a new 5-track EP Word, Pioneer.

Ghostly folk serves as the basis for the majority of the album. However, the Bay area resident, Kentucky-native brings much of the influence of his home state into the music. Roots and traditional music weaves its way into the mix.

Unfortunately, Word, Pioneer relies heavily on the patience of the listener to make an impact. Songs like "Memphis" and "Sidewinder" are subdued and move at a glacial pace. Not enough happens either sonically or lyrically to engage the listener over the course of seven-plus minutes. As a result it's easy to find oneself tuning in and out of the songs several times over their course.

One exception to this is the banjo-plucker "Lady Bird". A slightly quicker pace, more pronounced vocals, and fuller instrumentation make that song an enjoyable jaunt.

Alas, at the end of the day Word, Pioneer takes too long to head nowhere.

Best track: "Lady Bird"
