What I like about Fischerspooner is that unlike the vast majority of electronic/dance/techno (etc, etc) acts they write and record actual songs. Lyrics and all. I know. Shocking for the genre isn't it? The result is a track like "In a Modern World" which becomes a blend of New Order techno pop and The Jam style vocal delivery.
Not only that but songs like "The Best Revenge", with its Roxy Music-esque horns, are actually catchy. That's something that's all too often another causality of the monotonous electronica universe.
However, the group's best tracks are the darker, more ambient ones. "Amuse Bouche" becomes ominous with its methodical drone, punctuated by crashing cymbals. Likewise, "Infidels of the World Unite" will make you feel better about being just plain bad.
Like any electronic album, Entertainment does show the limitations of the genre. It does become difficult to hold the listener's attention for the entire course of the record.
But just when you think you've heard enough Fischerspooner gives you an old school hip hop "Just a Friend" beat before breaking out the French voicebox effects for "Danse En France". The album wraps up with the heart pumping "To The Moon".
Despite the obvious limitations of the genre, Fischerspooner give it a good shot on Entertainment.
Fischerspooner play the Phoenix in Toronto on June 2nd.
