Eilen Jewell: "Sea Of Tears" album review

Sea Of Tears (out Apr. 21st) is the third album from singer/songwriter Eilen Jewell.

Jewell's music is a dynamic combination of '60s pop and twang.  Drawing heavily on wall-of-sound girl pop while her band plunks away with a "boom-cha-boom", she makes the imagination run wild.  The listener can't help but wonder if this is what Dusty Springfield would have sounded like if she recording for Sun Records.

The band have a deft touch.  Working with upright bass, steel guitar, and more, they move comfortably from rockabilly ("Shakin' All Over") to sorrowful laments ("Fading Memory") with ease.

Jewell certainly wears her influences on her sleeve.  Not only is a cover of Loretta Lynn's "The Darkest Day" included, but "I'm Gonna Dress In Black" evokes thoughts of not only Johnny Cash, but The Animals' "House Of The Rising Sun" as well.

From time to time the album can plod.  There are a couple of stretches in the record that will have you begging Jewell to kick out the jams.

Thankfully, those instances are outweighed by the overall strength of the songwriting and playing.

Best tracks: "Shakin' All Over", "I'm Gonna Dress In Black"
