Since the (first) break-up of The Pixies Kim Deal has not been known as a prolific producer of new music. Her albums with The Breeders are so far apart you could have a couple of babies before the next one is released.
But now, a scant one year after the release of the full length Mountain Battles, we get a brand new EP from The Breeders, Fate To Fatal. Maybe the Deal twins should have waited a little bit longer.
The title track opens the EP and has the band, in full lo-fi mode, sounding like a bad Guided By Voices circa 1992 cover band. It doesn't get much better from there.
"Chances Are" has Deal singing with only the accompaniment of a pair of acoustic guitars. She's never had the greatest voice, and it's laid out for all the world to see on this song. Her vocals are just not strong enough to stand alone without lots of clatter.
The final track, "Pinnacle Hollow", is little more than filler. The song does have some interesting surf overtones, but they aren't engaging enough to hold over the course of the entire song.
The one bright spot on the EP is the track "The Last Time". Unfortunately for Deal, it's a standout not for her work but rather for the unmistakable deep whiskey growl of Mark Lanegan.
Skip the EP and get the one track.
