When Bat For Lashes stormed onto the indie music scene with their debut album two years ago it was a combination of Natasha Khan's stunning voice and the fairytale nature of the music that swept fans and critics away.On April 7th, Bat For Lashes return with their sophomore record Two Suns. Fans should expect much of the same as the basis of the new album.
Khan's gorgeous vocals are still a crucial ingredient in the Bat For Lashes mix. At times boasting child-like innocence, at times elegantly twisted and evil, no other piece sets the atmosphere more.
Incorporating elements of Gothic imagery, classical arrangements, and full on modern electro beats, Bat For Lashes have developed a sound that is at the same time modern and medieval. It's as though Siouxsie Sioux's soul inhabited Allison Goldfrapp's body and took on the moniker of Natasha Khan.
Two Suns could easily pass as the score for a Hollywood fantasy flick (Conan III perhaps?). Songs like the orchestral "Siren Song", the tribal rumble "Glass", and the head on electronic "Pearl's Dream" evoke visions of swords, sorcery and witchcraft.
If you want to be swept away into another time and place, and listen to a remarkable voice in the journey, then Two Suns is for you.
Bat For Lashes play the Mod Club in Toronto on April 25th.
