It's been more than 6 years since we've heard from Knoxville's Superdrag. It's been much longer since we've heard any new music from the band's original line-up.Both of those things will change tomorrow (Mar. 17th) when we get Industry Giants, the band's first album since 2003, and the first with the original quartet since 1998.
A few tracks into Industry Giants and it becomes clear that Superdrag is here to party like it's 1996. Songs like "Ready To Go", "Filthy & Afraid", and "Slow To Anger" are throwbacks to carefree '90s alternative rock. It's surprising how effective and refreshing that sound is against the backdrop of today's overly serious indie rock.
Unfortunately, there's not enough of that to last. On tracks like "Live and Breathe" and "Try", Superdrag fall back on a slow/mid tempo groove that serve to fill out a record, but not much more.
The most compelling songs are the one's that go a little further back for their inspiration. For example, "5 Minutes Ahead of the Chaos" leans heavily on New Day Rising-era Husker Du for its references.
It's good to see Superdrag return to the fold, however Industry Giants shows that the band still has some ring rust to shake off.
Best tracks: "Everything'll Be Made Right", "Cheap Poltergeists"
