Toronto electronic duo and vowel aversionists MSTRKRFT have made quite a name for themselves on the underground scene. With only one proper album under their belts (until now), the pair have really blazed their trail by being some of the most in-demand remixers on the planet.
MSTRKRFT are finally stepping up with their second full length album, Fist of God. And they've brought reinforcements in the form of guests like John Legend and Ghostface Killah.
It's not surprising, but the band doesn't stray far from the big booming beats they've become known for. While MSTRKRFT's groove is far superior to club-style techno dance, it lacks a depth of texture and nuance that make an act like Holy Fuck so appealing.
Only on one occasion do the duo really push the envelope. That happens with the KMFDM-style industrial blitz of "Click Click".
Despite the shortcomings of the album from a front-to-back listening experience, any track taken on its own would be the perfect soundtrack for an indie dance night.
MSTRKRFT play the Kool Haus in Toronto on April 9th.
