Michael Zapruder: "Dragon Chinese Cocktail Horoscope" album review

California singer/instrumentalist Michael Zapruder is an odd duck.  His music is sophisticated, yet slightly off-kilter at the same time.

Mellow and moody, Zapruder's new album Dragon Chinese Cocktail Horoscope immediately submerges you in a hypnotic whir of effects and loops.  Top these off with well placed woodwinds ("Ads For Feelings") and tribal rhythms ("Bang On a Drum") and you get a pretty eclectic array of sounds.

In vocal delivery and feel, Zapruder swings back and forth between Rufus Wainwright ("Can't Bring You Home") and a darker, ominous Leonard Cohen ("Black Wine").

After repeated listening to the album one question remains, does Zapruder have any relation to the guy who famously filmed the JFK assassination?

Best tracks: "Black Wine", "Ads For Feelings"
