Rearrange Beds (available digitally now, out physically on Mar. 17th) is the debut full length by Australian duo Kate Cooper and Damon Cox, An Horse.
The songs on Rearrange Beds are tight, catchy ditties. The simple drum, bass, guitar structure provide the tracks with an edgy, indie pop vibe reminiscent of the duo's friends Tegan & Sara.
The music interacts well with Cooper's vocals. The obvious Aussie accent coming through on most songs, gives Cooper's singing a quaint charm which reminds me instantly of Angie Hart. When Cox joins with harmony vocals, such as on songs like "Company", the duo truly excels.
Lyrically, the songs are personal without being heavy. There is a balance between innocence and inner strength that comes through. A song like "Little Lungs" begins as a hushed reflection. However by the end it has transformed into a exhilarating release. That feeling is created again with the more in-your-face defiant rumble of "Scared As Fuck".
At the end of the day, An Horse's greatest achievement is likely their ability to straddle the line between fun rock songs and angst-ridden tracks, straying never too far in either direction.
Rearrange Beds is a rock solid introduction to an irresistibly appealing pair.
An Horse play Tranzac in Toronto on Mar. 13th as part of Canadian Music Week.
