Texas foursome Honey Claws make electronic music with elements of funk, r&b, hip hop, dub, reggae, and of course, indie rock. After releasing a sparkling debut album last year (review here), the band have recently come back with a 4-song EP, Healer.
The EP kicks off with "Lightning Kill Eye", a bright sunny cut that incorporates feedback as a way to juxtapose the underlying pop ditty. Horns are prominent on "Pemporer", a modern take on Peter Gabriel world music circa 1983. On "Beat of the Wet Eve" Honey Claws show off their reggae and dub chops in what is a more interesting take on what Vampire Weekend are trying to do.
The closer, "Orange Kitty Stomp" gives us a glimpse of the band's darker side. A Trip Hop inspired track, the vocals are eerily reminiscent of Tricky.
Healer is a nice companion piece to the debut album. It shows the group have almost unlimited directions they can go in for their future releases.
I recently had the chance to do a Q&A with the members of Honey Claws. You can read it here.
