Fountains Of Wayne: "No Better Place- Live In Chicago" DVD review

Fountains Of Wayne are one of those bands that it's damn near impossible to hate.  They make catchy, accessible pop tunes that feature clever lyrics (Adam Schlesinger wrote songs for Stephen Colbert of God's sake).  It's a winning combination.

No Better Place- Live In Chicago is the band's first live DVD (out March 3rd).

Recorded at a 2005 show in the Windy City, the DVD is pretty much a straight up performance from the band.  The band give us 16 of their best tunes including the hits "Stacy's Mom", "Radiation Vibe", and "Hey Julie".  We even get a snippet of the outro to "Layla" during "I've Got Flair".

The sound is clean and clear.  The mix is one of the better one's I've heard on a live recording.  With the exception of severely underpowered keyboards, it is a radio-worthy sound.

The visuals are exceptional as far as live DVDs are concerned.  The setting is bright, well lit theatre, rather than a dingy club that we often see with concert films.  An attractive backdrop of multiple screens and lights serves well too.

Fountains Of Wayne however are not a band of showmen.  It's more or less a stand-at-your-mic-and-sing delivery, which tends to get dull to watch.

As a bonus features we're given six more songs performed live in studio and acoustically.

If you are a Fountains Of Wayne fan No Better Place is a decent document for you.
