Backyard Tire Fire: The Places We Lived- Album Review

Having spent time touring with the likes of Jason Isbell and the Reverend Horton Heat one would expect Backyard Tire Fire to be all alt.country and rockabilly.  It would be a gross underestimation of the band, one quickly corrected with a listen to their new album The Places We Lived.

For sure there are definitely country and southern rock tracks on the record.  Songs like "Welcome To the Factory" and "How the Hell Did You Get Back Here?" wouldn't sound out of place on the latest Drive-By Truckers record.  However, there is much more to the band.

"Shoulda' Shut It" is a friendly indie rock songs with an infectious chorus that fits well on college radio next to the latest from Dr. Dog.  The love and longing theme of "Time With You" makes it seemed almost destined to find a place on many an indie hipster's courtship mixed tape.

The piano intro to "Rainy Day Don't Go Away" is eerily reminiscent of Tom Waits' "Picture In A Frame".  That smokey lounge theme is continued on "One Wrong Turn".  These tracks show an appreciation for soulful blues that adds a unique depth to Backyard Tire Fire's music.

The album masterpiece may very well be the closer "Home Today".  The song is pretty and elegant, with a level of sophistication above and beyond anything else on the album.

The Places We Lived is a broad and diverse album.  Your favorite song will change as often as your mood.
