Tom Waits' Black Rider rock opera hits Toronto

For those of you who like the musical thee-ayter, the Tom Waits penned rock opera The Black Rider (The Casting of Magic Bullets) is now playing in Toronto.

The show, described as 'dark, delicious, and utterly seductive' runs at the Tarragon Theatre now through November 16th.

Tickets are pretty reasonably priced.

Caught last Saturday's show - my companion and I were greatly entertained and stimulated by the deep dark humour that fittingly pervades this retelling of the German folktale (The Free Shot, roughly translated). Tom Waits voice looms large in no small part thanks to November Theatre's Mackenzie Gray, although I can't fault any of the cast in making that comparison. The challenges of this material were largely dealt with and very few distracting moments seemed present in this performance. As such effective cabaret might have done in Weimar-era Germany, it felt perfectly at home at Tarragon; even if the overall effect is to have uncomfortable thoughts of how we each might sell out what we love for what we want.
While it remains true to the Weill and Brecht works it draws upon, I think this (final run of the Black Rider) will remain unlike anything else Toronto may stage for a long time.
GO. SEE. Closes Mov 16th, Tarragon's box office is available online.
