Oasis: Dig Out Your Soul- Album Review

It's strange that a band's seventh studio album would be their most raw and aggressive.  That's the case with the new Oasis album Dig Out Your Soul (out Oct. 7th).

All the usual elements of Oasis' music are still here.  It's a cocksure record with Beatle-esque harmonics and structures.  Where Dig Out Your Soul diverges from a lot of the band's output is in its sheer intensity.

The album opens with "Bag It Up" which is built around a gritty southern rock riff.  "The Turning" has a piano intro funkier than anything in the Oasis catalogue before morphing into an incendiary chorus.  "Waiting For the Rapture" is a straight ahead, hard hitting Noel-sung rock song.

Then the album gets spacier.  "I'm Outta Time" channels psychedelic sitar-era Beatles ballads, while "To Be Where There's Life" is a smouldering song with Spiritualized-type atmospheres.

That's before coming crashing back to Earth with the hard blues-driven "The Nature of Reality".

You won't find many obvious hit single on the record, but at the end of the day, Dig Out Your Soul, is one of the most in-your-face and interesting Oasis albums in a long time.

Best tracks: "Bag It Up", "To Be Where There's Life"

I am listening to the album now, and I can't say I'm enjoying it that much. Some albums take time to grow on me so I will continue to give it a spin. If you like it, it must be good! :)
