Greg Dulli: Live At the Triple Door- Album Review

Be it with The Gutter Twins, Twilight Singers, or Afghan Whigs, I am a huge fan of Greg Dulli.  I think he brings a combination of passion and sombre hipness that few, if any, artists can match.

That's why I was stoked (yes, I'm channeling my inner surfer for this review) when I got my hands on Dulli's new solo live album Live at the Triple Door.  The digital-only album was recorded in October of last year at a VERA Project fundraiser at the Triple Door nightclub in Seattle.

The 11-track set draws mainly from Dulli's Twilight Singers catalogue.  The songs have been stripped down and reconstructed relying mostly on piano and strings (much of which were provided by that dog's Petra Haden).

What has not been stripped down is Dulli's impassioned vocals.  From the growl on "The Killer" through to the understated yet burning delivery of "Front Street" Dulli is at his best.  And that's saying a lot for a performer as capable as him.

"Black Is the Color Of My True Love's Hair" is just as intense and sexually charged as the album version, while Dulli's rendition of "Isn't It A Pity" is beautiful in its elegance.  Pigeonhead/Brad singer Shawn Smith lends his crazy high pitched vocal to "That's Just How That Bird Sings".

Among the Twilight Singers canon is a cover of Jose Gonzalez's "Down The Line".  Dulli's arrangement of this indie favorite is far more elaborate and ornate as the original while still keeping true to the darkness of the song.

The real standout track is the rendition of "Bonnie Brae".  Between Dulli's raw vocals, the delicate arrangement, and the palpable tension among the audience, this version of the song can only be adequately described as otherworldly.

Live At the Triple Door is a tremendous document of a rare live talent and one of the best live collections of the year.

Best tracks: "Bonnie Brae", "Isn't It A Pity"
