The good news is the band has ended a bitter dispute with their former label and are set to release a new full length album early in 2009. In the meantime we have the new EP Festival Thyme.
The EP sees the band straying further from their Sonic Youth feedback to carve even more of their own path. The resonant feedback and art rock atmosphere are still in the mix, but they are more discreet and subtle.
"Bells Of Creation" opens the EP with a "War Pigs"-like heavy guitar and big, full bodied drums. The power chord chorus gets the party started right.
"Inland Sea" is an ornate rocker. The vocals are more energized and anthemic than we've seen recently from the band.
The EP wraps up with the instrumental "The Betrayal Of Robert Casement and the Irish Brigade". The track is drenched in reverb with beautiful keyboards rising beneath the din. Eventually they break through the fuzz to bring the EP to a glorious end.
Yes, Festival Thyme is only an EP, but it's a good stop gap measure for fans who are chomping at the bit for new material from Trail Of Dead.
