Sonic Youth officially go indie again

It's official!

After weeks of speculation, noise rock icons Sonic Youth have officially announced their return to an indie label.  The band will be releasing their 16th studio album in early 2009 on Matador Records.

You can imagine the people at Matador are stoked having pulled off probably the most prestigious acquisition an indie label could ask for.  Read their announcement here

Sonic Youth had been recording on major label Geffen since 1990's Goo.  At the time their signing was a huge coup for major labels, and actually contributed to Nirvana's eventual decision to sign to the same label.
