Last November: Over The Top and Under The Weather- Album Review

Last November is a very young band.  Like most young bands their vintage, the songwriting and lyrics aren't particularly deep on their new album Over The Top and Under The Weather.

Where the band does differ from other young bands is in the craftsmanship of the songs.  The rhythm section is tight.  The guitars are sharp.  There is plenty of other accent instrumentation like strings, piano, and yep, I'm pretty sure I heard cowbell.

The band does have a tendency to skirt perilously close to that dreaded emo line.  Thankfully they do manage to walk that tightrope and stay on the good side.  After all, emo isn't generally noted for the quality melodies and hooks that Last November give us.

The band also shows a tremendous ability to inject humour into their songs.  Just look at the playful song titles below.

Unfortunately, Luke Pilgrim's vocals can be a bit too fidgety for my liking, but that's a minor issue.

Over The Top and Under The Weather isn't the greatest album I've heard recently.  However, it is a great document of a band that has shown loads of potential for the future.

Best tracks: "Seventeen At Three In the Morning", "The Bumper Sticker Song"
