Let's frame this properly by saying that it's been quite some time since I've enjoyed any of the output from Kings Of Leon. I find their music generally too half-assed to enjoy. It's like they don't try.
The new album, Only By Night, definitely corrects that problem. It's far more polished and complete sounding than anything in the band's catalogue. Unfortunately the band may have gone too far in that direction.
Not only is it a more polished record, but it's a harder edged record too. "Sex On Fire" may be the band's hardest song to date, and from my perspective, one of the most enjoyable.
Gone are the jam band wanks and in their place are U2 circa 1983 guitar riffs. Alas, by the sixth track "Revelry" that's grown dull too. They have the listener almost begging to hear something different.
While more listenable than most of what we've heard from Kings Of Leon recently, Only By the Night is still only a fair record which wears out its welcome pretty quickly.
Kings Of Leon play the Kool Haus in Toronto on Nov. 11th with We Are Scientists and The Whigs
