The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs is possibly the best concept album in indie rock history. What can be better than 69 songs on the theme of love, in more musical styles than I can even count?
The songs haven't lost any of their humour in the 9 years since its release. I still laugh out loud at some of the songs.
One of the things I've been struggling with since they came out it paring the 3-CD down to a listenable single volume length. But I think I've finally got it!
So, 9 years in the making, here is my abridged 69 Love Songs playlist:
Volume 1
Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits- Fido, Your Leash Is Too Long
- Reno Dakota
- The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side
- How Fucking Romantic
- The One You Really Love
- Sweet-Lovin' Man
- Nothing Matters When You're Dancing
Volume 2
If You Don't Cry- When My Boy Walks Down The Street
- (Crazy For You) But Not That Crazy
- Kiss Me Like You Mean It
- Papa Was a Rodeo
- I Shatter
- My Only Friend
Volume 3
Underwear- I'm Sorry I Love You
- Bitter Tears
- Meaningless
- Queen of the Savages
- The Night You Can't Remember
- Love Is Like a Bottle of Gin
- I Can't Touch You Anymore
Did I get anything wrong? Leave out one of your favorites? Let me know!
