Album review: One Day As A Lion

One Day As A Lion is the long awaited post-Rage Against The Machine project from singer Zach de la Rocha (thought he was Axling on us there for a while). For the EP he is joined by Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore.

The 5-song EP is as close to the original Rage Against the Machine as any of that band's members have come.

De le Rocha's vocals are the same style of rap metal that still makes RATM unique. Unlike rap metal wannabes that came after (atonal acts like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, etc), de la Rocha's raps actually work with the metal groove laid down beneath them. Even if they aren't as sharp and charged as we saw during RATM's heyday.

The lyrics are still contain biting social and political commentaries that we've come to expect from RATM. However, they seem a little less focussed, a little more scattergun on One Day As A Lion.

Overall, One Day As A Lion is far and away the best rap metal effort we've seen since the final RATM album. Whether that's enough to make it worth the purchase however, is debatable.
