Fleet Foxes is a five-piece band from Washington state. They were one of the bands that created a huge buzz at this year's South By Southwest festival in Austin. They're self-titled debut full length was released this week on Seattle's home of the cool, Sub Pop Records. It's easy to see why the group has created such a stir. They have a refreshing musical style, one that hasn't been rehashed time and again.
The groups vocals are melodic, with harmonies that are reminiscent of The Beach Boys or The Byrds. There is some country twang added to the mix, as well as a dash of Sonic Youth-style feedback. Couple that with production which would sound at home on a Shins album and you get the drift.
Not only that, but on the album's most standout track, "White Winter Hymnal", the group employs that great of rock n' roll cliches, the round.
The lyrics are chock full of beautiful Pacific Northwest imagery. The references to snowfall, mountains, and streams almost makes one yearn for winter's frosty return.
Fleet Foxes is unlike anything you've heard in the recent past. For their fresh angle on indie rock, Fleet Foxes are likely to end up on a lot of year end top 10 lists.
Fleet Foxes play the Phoenix in Toronto on July 16th opening for Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.
